Introducing Cuba Economic Review: Insights on Cuba’s Economy

by Cuba Study Group

The Cuba Study Group is excited to announce that we’re spinning off the “Economic Roundup” from Cuba Review into a dedicated publication: Cuba Economic Review, authored by economist Ricardo Torres. This new newsletter will deliver expert insights and analysis on the trends and policy developments shaping Cuba’s economic future. Subscribers will now receive one newsletter per week, alternating between Cuba Review and Cuba Economic Review.

In this issue, you’ll find an update on four dynamics currently shaping Cuba’s economic landscape. First, we review the recent performance of international arrivals and provide a projection for the end of 2025, a year on track to be the weakest since 2003. We also look at the evolution of the private business sector, where the growth of MIPYMES has slowed following regulatory changes introduced in 2024. Additionally, we examine the unprecedented surge in asylum requests filed by Cubans in Brazil and situate this trend within the broader context of migration. Finally, we present an analysis of the nickel industry: current production levels, the impact of depressed international prices, and the structural challenges that lie ahead.
